The Promash file formats the important fields of each beer into the HTML style tags in a way that is understandable to a web browser but not necessarily an XML parser. The valid Promash file formats are as follows:
What this does: This application will read the Promash file (a.k.a. PROMASH) and the optional BeerXML one (a.k.a. BEERXML) and output them into a BeerXML file (a.k.a. BEERXML).
What it does NOT do: This application will covert any file that is not a beer file (such as beerTxt) into a BeerXML file. Also, it will not convert beer.pro. It will also not convert a beer file that contains non-printable characters in it. If the beer has a very long Description field, Promash will chop it up into multiple sections.
This is a single executable that is designed to be run as a lightweight batch program. I have provided a command line for it and a batch file for it. The batch files are provided for the convenience of it being run as a batch file. If you want to run it as a command line tool, I highly recommend using the batch file version. The binary for the tool is included in the download.

It is a conversion program to convert Promash files into BeerXML files.
It is very easy to use, one command line operation is all that is necessary to generate a BeerXML file, the input file, that should contain Promash records, which contains data about the beer recipes is treated as a template. Promash is a format that can be read by different software packages which are either free or inexpensive.
It allows for a user to set a variety of properties, such as:
Beer Original Name: name of beer
Beer Description: description of the beer
Beer Recipe Number: a number that defines the order of the beer
An optional beer category: useful for grouping the recipes together, such as Single, Imported, etc.

Well, I had nothing to do this morning, so I thought I’d crank up the homebrewing software a bit and see if it could keep me busy for a while. Last night’s batch was the first commercially produced beer that I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting. It’s a golden ale that’s a little bit of everything, I think.
I had a good-sized amount of candi sugar I was able to use up in the process, and that was nice. I just kind of screwed up my calculations this time, though, and I used a bit too much. That happened a lot the first time I went through this brew, and, as a result, the sweet rice tasted rather acrid. I’ll learn how to do the calculations right eventually, I suppose. (Thanks for the help guys.)
Anyway, I’m pretty happy with the result and will probably make a few more iterations along these lines with some modifications. I also started on the 5 gallon extract kit. I just printed out the formula and got started. The final volume is unknown at this point. My calculations came in a tad high, so I may have to make some adjustments.

This is a simple application that will take a Promash file and convert it to BeerXml compatible format. It was specifically designed so that additional information can be added to the recipes that is not present in Promash files.
W3X format:
The format used by Promash is very limited, and you have to remember most basic information like the name, the ingredients, the recipe name, the abv, etc. The BeerXML format is much more open than the Promash format and much more well defined.
BeerXML format:
The BeerXML format is compatible with several other common brewing software packages. BeerXML files can also be uploaded directly to other sites that offer recipes. The BeerXML files are pretty easy to work with once you get a hang of them.
If you convert the Rec.recipe.bbl files into BeerXML files they can be imported into the software of your choice. While you can always set your favorite beer software to take a.bbl file and extract the recipe information that is stored there there are a ton of software programs that also have an option to import the original format.
There is a bunch of information that gets stored in the BeerXML files. Each item will contain the information (except the.bbl name which is separated by ::)

What’s New in the?
– it gets rid of most of the formatting (like space, tabs, newlines) from the beer recipe, so you can edit it in the editing tool of your choice (promash/notepad/other editors)
– it uses the naming convention of the original promash file to auto-generate a new filename
– If you give it a filename without the “rec” it will look at the extensions to figure out what the converter should name the new promash file
– it is working on Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7
– it will attempt to convert the file but if there is an error in the file it will return an error message and stop.
– the default output directory is the same directory that you run the converter from
– it is totally free, but I will add extra features over time as I have the time and inclination
– I’m planning on making a GUI version, but I don’t have any plans to make a mac version

RULES:
– only files, directories (with rec in the name) can be converted. anything else you choose to call will not be converted.
– any naming convention is acceptable as long as it keeps the same name as the filename given to the converter.
– no modification is to be made to the original file, the file is left in tact.
– if you choose to add stuff like timestamps, “Today’s date” etc. there is not a way to remove it without having to tweak the conversion process to strip it out
– you don’t need to strip out all of the text, something like “comments” will be left, not “strip the comments” or “remove all the comments”
– no “template” files are to be added to the final beerxml, only canned recipes are supported
– prefer not to change the filenames or any directory information
– *most* features will be implemented in a later version
