In this chapter, I point out some basic tools that are available in the Photoshop image editing panel. These tools are essentials for any beginning photographer to learn. I introduce you to the different tools, show you how they work, and show you how they can benefit your image-editing workflow.
## Searching for Your Tools
Photoshop’s Toolbox is what enables you to interact with your image in different ways. You use the different tools to create new layers, adjust the appearance of existing layers, crop and straighten your images, and edit curves and colors. You can also control the appearance and functionality of layer groups, which are a kind of grouping feature.
When you use the tools, they appear in the Toolbox, an area in the upper-left corner of the image window. Here, you find the Classic tools. To access the Quick tools, you must use the Tool Options button at the top-right corner of the image window.
The Quik panel appears when you select the Vintage Embossed panel at the bottom of the Basic Menu, shown in Figure 3-1. (See Appendix A for instructions on opening the Classic panel.)
Some of the controls, such as the Move tool, are contextual, and a drop-down menu appears from the right edge of the control area to let you change the type of tool that appears. For example, if you use the Rectangular Marquee tool, the context menu appears.

If you select a tool, you can control its behavior by using the Property inspector, shown in Figure 3-2. This is the first window you see when you activate the Property inspector. Most of the controls on the Property inspector are self-explanatory, although the Duplicate option is for creating another copy of the selected object (which is useful if you change your mind about what you want to do to the selected object).

Combine layers
You can combine layers to make complex designs (the real power of Photoshop).
This effect can be seen in the editing windows where there is a group of boxes, each of which contains a different layer. You can adjust the opacity of each layer and even combine them to create a new layer.
You can use this method to hide unwanted background noise by “masking” the image and placing it on top of another layer.
Combine layers on a single layer by selecting them all in the Layers palette. From there, you can choose to “Merge Layers” to create a new layer with the combined layers.
Alternatively, you can use the “Arrange” feature.
Select the layers in the Layers palette then click the “Arrange” button. A menu should pop up with the available options. You can arrange the order of the layers, move them to a different layer, resize them, or even split them (combine) them.
You can use any of these methods to apply a mask over a particular layer.

Stack your layers
Photoshop users might be used to stacking layers on top of each other to create complex layers. However, Photoshop Elements allows you to separate layers into individual tabs within the editor.
By default, the elements in Photoshop Elements are sorted by height. You can customize the “Order” of your layers and add new ones by clicking the “Add Layer” button in the toolbar.
The layers that you create are stored in “tabs” or sections of the editor.

Are these MSDeploy parameters time-sensitive?
In our MSDeploy configuration, the /verbosity parameter that is defaulted to 2 is an integer, but in others I have seen it is an enumeration. Should I treat the string below, or will the usage of the enumeration be in effect from now on regardless of the string used?

If you’re interested in MSDeploy parameters, I would expect that the value of an “enum” parameter should be one of the choices – so yes, the usage of an enumeration is expected.
