From pap smears to STIs, here are three misconceptions surrounding casual sex and how they can impact your sex life.
The risks of casual sex
According to a study conducted at the Center for Applied Research in the Addictions, 51 percent of college students surveyed admit they’ve had sex with someone they didn’t plan to. Of those students, 30 percent said they’re willing to use protection or take some “risks.” So what are those risks?

Women are 2.2 times more likely than men to have a sexually transmitted infection, such as gonorrhea or chlamydia.
Around 4,680 people contract chlamydia every day in the U.S.
Some 90,000 people contract gonorrhea every day in the U.S.
More than half of women think it’s acceptable to sleep with a man without protection if he’s seen you have an STI, but only 42 percent of men said it’s okay if their partner has a STI.
Who’d want to get casual sex and STD checked?
According to an American College Health Association survey in 2014, 45 percent of respondents said they’d never asked a male sex partner about STIs before having sex.
And only 30 percent of men surveyed had condoms in their homes.

The idea of testing for an STI and waiting a week to meet a new person is foreign to many people.
“Sure you can Google it, but who wants to do that right before they get down to business?” says Tonya Ghoul, director of the Margaret Kistler STD Education Center at the University of Florida.
The idea that you can get STDs and not know about it isn’t true, says Ghoul. If you’re truly risk free, the odds of catching something are tiny, but if you’re being careless, she says, things aren’t looking good.
A study from the University of Florida found that almost 60 percent of women and less than 43 percent of men surveyed said they think STIs are less common than they actually are.
In August of 2016, the American Sexual Health Association released results of a survey that asked 5,228 participants about their

If more and more women are turning to Tinder to find the one thing that’s been missing from their lives, they’re actually doing the opposite of what they think they’re doing.
“The funny thing about casual sex, is that people who are having it are thinking that it’s a relationship, that it’s something that they’re going to be engaging in for a long time,” De Ritis says. “They’re fooling themselves into thinking that it’s something that’s going to be super meaningful when, in reality, it’s just a fling and the person they’re having sex with is someone that they’re just not going to see.”
