The iron ore price has tumbled more than 40 percent from last year, after a slide in Chinese economic growth has triggered worries about the outlook for demand for the commodity, and a rout in the U.S. dollar this week.
Prices have been battered after a slide in the U.S. currency this week to a record low triggered a selloff across commodities markets, most notably iron ore, which is priced in dollars.
The prospect of a weaker greenback had earlier prompted miners to cut costs and scale back investment, but with prices now falling sharply, and the economy showing signs of stalling, producers are facing further pressure.
“I’m certainly concerned that we could see another slowdown in the next quarter and this is why I think mining stocks will struggle and we could see a fall in commodity prices,” said Shane Oliver, chief economist at AMP Capital, a non-bank mortgage lender.
Oliver said the “macro situation is not great” in Australia and the risk of a sharp downturn in the economy is high, given the strength of the dollar.
“There’s just a few factors, such as the currency effect, that are putting pressure on the economy,” Oliver said.
