External data interchange with other CAD systems
Today, most CAD systems do not share data directly. The usual way is to export data into a separate file format, usually a binary format, and import it into the system.
The oldest example of interoperability, which remains the most widely used, is DGN (Data General Network) Files. These files are a text-based file format for storing 2D drawings. Autodesk acquired Data General in 1985 and is one of the largest DGN users.
DGN files could be generated by non-Autodesk systems by exporting a drawing into PostScript (or EPS) format and transferring it to Autodesk with an FTP program. These export tools would create a DGN file with a single layer that could be read by the Autodesk system. Such a DGN file could then be “scaled up” to a full drawing using AutoCAD.
The term DGN is used both for the interchange format and the actual binary file format.
Interchange is supported by the CAD files (DXF and DWG), and is supported by CAD programs including Mastercam by the use of ExportDGN (or SendDGN) and import in AutoCAD.
Autodesk’s data interchange technology, Extension Packages (EPK), has expanded this concept to include importing, viewing and manipulating design information in other CAD applications. EPKs are a standard CAD format which allows object-level data exchange from Autodesk CAD products. EPKs are accessible by any Autodesk CAD application, even if the EPK was created in another CAD application.
A data interchange between AutoCAD and NX is also in development. AutoCAD Data Exchange was first made available to OEM customers in early 2008.
File format interchange
A file format such as DXF, DWG, dxf, etc. has the following capabilities:
it is simple and versatile, so it can be manipulated by most of the CAD software;
it is a self-descriptive format, so the format description (generally in a so-called “tagging”) is included in the file. This means that CAD software can automatically read the file without needing any special information on how the file was created;
it is a binary format, so reading it is faster than reading a text file.

Go to the Autocad website and log in using your Autocad account. You can choose to download the latest product release or use the one that you have registered and active.
You don’t need a product key to register the software.
