Autocad 2018 is a full-featured desktop CAD program for creating technical drawings and models that you can print or view on the Internet. It is the successor to AutoCAD LT 2013. Troy Davis’s Murderers Are Now Free
Troy Davis will be put to death on Sunday. If the fact that Davis has now spent four years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit is not compelling enough reason to overturn his execution, the full-court press from his lawyers should be.
The United States Supreme Court rejected Davis’s appeal of his conviction in 2011. The same was true in the courts of appeal. The Supreme Court noted that the higher courts had weighed in on the case at length, and declined to hear the appeal. Davis’s lawyers asked the court to review the case again, pointing out that even the prosecutors who prosecuted Davis at trial acknowledged that he was innocent. But the court was unmoved.
This is not a case of a second-tier court running afoul of the Supreme Court. This is a highly regarded court, whose members believe in the rule of law and, in this case, have affirmed that the court must abide by the laws that were written by Congress and state legislatures.
The killing of an innocent person is terrible. The torment of waiting for the man who murdered you to be executed is even worse. But ultimately, the Supreme Court and other courts have affirmed that the state of Georgia has the right to hold someone in prison if it can prove the person’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Some people may argue that the law is unfair, and the laws could be fixed. Perhaps. But we shouldn’t be so eager to throw the law out in the name of fairness. There may be ways to fix the death penalty. Perhaps the constitutionality of the punishment could be challenged. Perhaps the legislature can abolish the death penalty without going through the hassle of re-enacting the law and passing it again. Perhaps the Supreme Court can be persuaded to overrule or limit its past decisions.
The fact is that the laws remain on the books, and the state has the right to enforce them. Davis will be executed tomorrow. It’s time to move on.Tartessos
