For that purpose, 22 schizophrenia patients (with schizophrenia-related psychosis) and 22 healthy controls (HCs) were studied using electroencephalography (EEG) during the observation of grasping or resting. We found that compared to HCs, the observed action of grasping was accompanied by a significantly lower right-sided lateralization of the amplitude and a significantly longer latency of the P200 component in the schizophrenia group. In contrast, the left lateralization of the P300 component, which was observed in the resting condition in HCs, was not detected in patients. The amplitude of the P200 component in patients was positively correlated with the level of negative symptoms, whereas the latency of the P200 and the P300 was negatively correlated with the level of positive symptoms. Our data suggest that schizophrenia affects the functional organization of the neural network responsible for the representation of observed action in the right temporal cortex and that the severity of the disorder is associated with the structural integrity of this neural network.
