History

AutoCAD’s precursor, MicroCAD, was released in 1981 for the Apple II microcomputer, but failed to gain popularity due to its steep learning curve. A third software release, MicroDRAW for the Apple II and the Commodore PET, was released in 1983. This second release of MicroCAD took the same basic concept but improved the user interface and streamlined the overall design. MicroCAD and MicroDRAW were marketed as a single product which, for the Apple II, was also distributed as a kit with a software floppy disk.

Autodesk acquired MicroCAD in 1984, and, in 1984, Autodesk released AutoCAD, a program for the Apple Macintosh. This program was the first mainstream CAD program to run on the Macintosh platform and, with the introduction of the Macintosh in 1984, became the industry standard for commercial CAD programs for the next 20 years.

Windows releases

AutoCAD remained tied to the Macintosh platform for the next decade. The move to Windows was delayed for years due to several factors. Chief among them was that the graphics hardware available to PC users was much less capable than the hardware available for the Macintosh. In addition, the development of AutoCAD for Windows required compatibility with a new programming environment, an environment that was not yet well developed. Despite these technical obstacles, the move to Windows took place in 1992, and was a landmark in the history of AutoCAD.

AutoCAD 2000 was released in late 1993, and included a complete rewrite of the application that, by and large, made AutoCAD the program it is today. Windows-only releases of AutoCAD followed that version, all with their own price tags.

AutoCAD has been available for Windows only since version 2000. In 2006, AutoCAD 2009 was released, which introduced a number of important new features and platforms for use.
