The study, which was published in the May issue of the journal Limnology and Oceanography, found that a region stretching from western Canada to northern Mexico is becoming progressively warmer, while the temperature of ocean waters is rising.

These environmental changes, the study said, are causing the water temperatures of a major section of the Gulf of Mexico to decrease, causing the oxygen to dissolve in the water.

The study’s lead researcher said the dead zones found in the Gulf of Mexico are becoming more common and are spreading from the Gulf to the Atlantic Ocean.

“This research confirms what we were seeing, that the oxygen in the Gulf is being used up,” said Dr. David Brain, who conducted the study for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. “We are learning how to manage these dead zones, but the legacy of the dead zone is you don’t have enough oxygen and more of these are going to be on the West Coast, so there could be dead zones in the Pacific.”

The study’s findings come as lawmakers are working to pass legislation that will see the federal government fund research into the water quality in the Gulf of Mexico.
