Many argue that today’s music sounds a bit too clean and overproduced. It’s obvious that digital instruments have advanced tremendously, surpassing the capabilities of the tools from the analog era, but taking away some of that warmth that was actually created by analog devices’ imperfections. This is why many developers design instruments and plugins with the specific purpose of emulating analog sounds.
In rare cases, the emulations manage to expand the capabilities of the analog design while staying true to the original sound. This may very well be the case for Antresol, a plugin labeled as an “analog BBD stereo flanger”.
An analog effect with a smooth design
D16 Audio Group Software are known for their excellent effect plugins and instruments that often emulate the analog sounds of old. Antresol is no exception; though it’s presented as an emulation of a BBD based analog delay line, it can do so much more than delay (or flanger, for that matter).
The bucket-brigade device (or BBD for short) is a small chip that was used to create the first analog delay units, at the end of the 1960s. Before that, all musicians had were tape delays, which weren’t that easy to transport due to their fragility. But the size of the BBD chip meant that delay could now be achieved through more compact units. Antresol’s photorealistic design tries to imitate that of those classic units, but also offers you plenty of other features.
More versatile than you’d expect
I’ve already mentioned delay and flanger, but it seems that Antresol can also be a chorus, bit crusher, vibrato, or distortion unit. You can start by browsing its presets (which are neatly grouped into the aforementioned categories) or try to create your own effect.
The interface is quite easy to navigate. You have parameters like offset, rate, and depth for both the left and right channels, which can be linked or used differently for a more creative stereo sound design. A lot of the plugin’s power also comes for the LFO which can be used in three modes: Mistress, Linear, and Concave. While a lot more can be said by this apparently simple plugin, I’m going to stop here and just recommend it to any producer who is trying to add warm and subtle analog effects into+ their mix.

Analog Delay
You can think of Antresol as a digital delay device. This device is different from the standard echo you find on your PC; this one is a BBD with a real analog sound. The analog BBD delay sound sounds like a short circuit was placed between the two inputs and the output of the device in order to achieve an interesting sound.
This means Antresol will treat your input as feedback to the output of the device. The delayed version of the input will be added to the output and this will be repeated with the delayed version of the input and so on.
The length of the delay can be controlled through the delay time parameter, this number will set how many echoes the delay is going to produce. At higher rates you will hear fewer echoes which will make the delay sound smoother and more natural than at lower rates.
The delay can also be controlled through the depth parameter, which can vary from 1 to 14. It will change how much the delayed signal will be attenuated as the echo is played back.
The delay can also be controlled through the rate parameter. This will determine how fast the delay is going to play. It can go from 0.0034 to 4.0 seconds, with 0.0 being the fastest setting. Note that the settings of the rate and the delay time are multiplicative, meaning that they increase together. This is one way to achieve a smoother effect.
Another way to get a smoother effect is to add a LFO to control the delay and to make the rate and delay time different. If you set the LFO to a first order waveform, the effect will be linear. If you set it to a triangular waveform, then the effect will be concave. You can change the settings of the LFO to do things like make it play faster, make it swing slower, or make it go off for a few seconds.

What is a bucket-brigade device or BBD?
A bucket-brigade device, or BBD, is a circuit which uses a series of stages. Each stage has a delay, an input, and a non-inverting buffer. The output of the final stage is fed to an output which is typically connected to a speaker. The number of stages is determined by the amount of delay required.
Bucket-brigade devices can be used for delay, chorusing, or flanging, among other things. The term “Bucket-brigade” comes from the way the input and output wires need to be switched to make the device work, and the device is also known as a “Bucket Brigade Device” (BBD).

I love this plugin when paired with the “Polyphon” compressor. I use this plugin on vinyl to cut and paste a master track so I can cross process it and apply a different effect to each side. This will kick it up to 11.
