Using Photoshop
Photoshop can be a little complex at first if you’re not used to it, but stick with it and you’ll eventually be using it with confidence. To illustrate its many editing tools, this book features a full set of images that feature a wide variety of subjects in different moods, and each uses a few different editing tools, which are shown in Figure 1-1.

To access Photoshop’s many editing features, choose Edit⇒Preferences (Windows) or Edit⇒Preferences (Mac). Then select the general tab. Figure 1-2 shows the general tab for Windows and Figure 1-3 shows the general tab for Mac.
On the General tab, you find a number of presets for when you want to start working with Photoshop:
The Adobe Photoshop 8.0 Presets: Photoshop 8.0 (PS 8.0) is the Photoshop version released before Photoshop Elements, so it’s the version used for this book. The number 8.0 is listed here, next to the button used to return to the Preference dialog. This version of Photoshop still works fine. The 8.0 Presets is not available for use with Photoshop Elements.

The General tab provides four preset preferences settings for Photoshop when you open the program. The first preferences setting (see the previous list) refers to the default Photoshop 8.0 preset, which is the most recent default that Adobe has provided. With the 8.0 preset, you are directed to the Photoshop 8.0 dialog, as shown in Figure 1-4.

Other shapes can be created by using the paintbrush as the center point and drawing an arc shape. The Arc shape will always be a closed shape.
