This in turn suggests the existence of other black holes in the galaxy, and adds evidence for a warped, spinning disk of material around the nucleus of our own Milky Way. A team led by Marten Broos of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, Germany, detected the series of seven radio pulses last fall at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany, using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico. The pulses, detected in 2011 and 2012, are spaced by about 15 minutes. “We’re witnessing the birth of a star,” say study coauthor Francesco Massaro of the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics in Rome, referring to the stellar-mass black hole in our galaxy. Stellar-mass black holes, known as SMBHs, are typically millions or billions of times more massive than the Sun. The pulses are striking for several reasons, says astronomer René Ojha of the Tata Institute for Fundamental Research in Mumbai, India. One is that seven is a “highly improbable” number for a pulsar. Another is that their time scale is so short — down to a few milliseconds. “This is a thing you rarely see,” Ojha says. Another is that they emanate from a source so far away that they could be detected even if they were coming directly toward Earth. On Earth and in the Milky Way “I found it odd that a black hole so far from us in the universe, when I did the first calculations, the angular size of the black hole would be so big,” Ojha says. “Then I had a critical [mind-expanding] moment. I realized that if the black hole is spinning in the same direction as Earth, it would appear to be very small.” When the waves cross Earth’s horizon, they’re much fainter than the background radio emissions from our galaxy, which allows the researchers to see the source of the pulses.
