A Model to Assess the Risk of Exposure to Sulfate Drinking Water and Malignant Brain Tumors: A Case-Control Study in Uruguay.
To explore the association of exposure to sulfate drinking water and brain cancer risk. We conducted a case-control study, with 99 brain cancer cases and 98 controls, matched by sex, age (±5 years) and residency, in Montevideo, Uruguay, between 1997 and 2003. Exposure to sulfate in the drinking water was evaluated by a question about water sources asked to the cases and controls. Water sources other than water from the public water system were used by 45.6% of the cases and 21.3% of the controls (odds ratio=3.5; 95% confidence interval: 1.1-11.4). Sulfate was the main source of water for 5% of the cases and for 2.1% of the controls. When the entire population was considered, exposure to sulfate increased the risk of brain cancer (odds ratio=2.5; 95% confidence interval: 1.0-6.0). When the study population was stratified by sex and age, the risks of all brain cancer were increased only in the youngest population (≤44 years old) (odds ratio=5.0; 95% confidence interval: 1.2-22.4) and in women (odds ratio=2.8; 95% confidence interval: 1.0-7.6).
