In 1985, the first version of the company’s “Draw” drawing system was introduced, and the program became known as AutoCAD. The name “AutoCAD” had been used in 1979 as the name of a very small program written by Marvin H. Comitz, a programmer at Xerox PARC. The name was chosen because it was short and was easy to pronounce.
While PaintCAD was designed to be easy to use, AutoCAD was designed to be very powerful. At the time, drawing programs were rarely able to handle complex CAD projects or deal with files over 64 MB.
