A new study shows that water vapor in the stratosphere is being carried to the upper atmosphere by hydrogen gas, which is rare on Earth. The finding is important because it indicates a possible new way to inject oxygen into the stratosphere and potentially to mitigate the greenhouse effect.
The earth’s atmosphere is a strange place. Besides oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen, there are the usual gases such as argon, neon, water vapor, carbon monoxide, and others. However, there are two important chemical elements that don’t usually occur in the atmosphere. One is hydrogen, which makes up about 0.13 percent of the total atmosphere.
