In order to make the computer usable for people other than computer programmers, DEC created the Application Development Environment (ADE), a suite of development tools and libraries designed to help programmers write software for the mainframe computer.
At the time, DEC’s mainframe computers were seen as a superior tool for programmers to use, because the mainframes supported a programming environment that was similar to that of the computer languages then being used. For many DEC programmers, including John Maloney, a significant problem with the mainframes was that they were too slow to be used for creating computer-aided design (CAD) applications.
In 1981, Maloney realized that he could use the design workflows of a CAD program to develop a system that would allow users to create and edit drawings on a slower mainframe computer. Maloney called this new system Autodesk: an acronym that refers to the Autodoc device – a system of electronic components used to store and process information, such as Autodesk.
