Buguya is a town in the Amazonas Municipality of Amazonas in Venezuela. It is located northwest of Yavari at an altitude of 95 m. Buguya has a population of 4,974 (2005). The region is part of the Terra firme of Colombia and Venezuela, and is part of the Yavari River watershed. The population is rapidly increasing, particularly due to logging.
Inca Empire
The Inca occupied Buguya and the surrounding area between the 7th and 13th centuries, using it as their main staging post on their migrations from Ecuador, which they called Quipaca, through the continent northwards to Colombia and the south. The first Inca-Yavari cultures were occupied in the late 7th century, and the most significant period of occupation is believed to be between 1240 and 1460. During that time, many artifacts were found, including ceramics and stone tools, amongst others. Artifacts from earlier occupations were also found, particularly from around 1500.
The name Buguya comes from the Spanish word for ‘bear’, and the Spanish name the town takes after the ‘bear’ of the Incas. In some indigenous languages from the area, the name is ‘Pama’ (or ‘Pamagua’ in the Jíbaro language). The Yavari is called ‘Pebu’ by the indigenous peoples.
The first evidence of a Inca town at Buguya is the ruins of Yavari, discovered in 1857 by Captain José Méndez, in addition to other Inca settlements.
Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin visited Buguya in 1832, and lived on the Rio Napo for around 10 days. He stayed in Yavari, on the nearby Río Yavari, in the home of the Achumani Cacica I of Yavari, which was at the headwaters of the Yavari.
He left Yavari on 23 August of that year, and his next stop was the Grande de Yavari, with a series of sunsets that Charles said were “unrivalled for beauty in any part of the world.” After that, Charles visited several other towns
