History

AutoCAD is the commercial descendant of ACAD—Autodesk’s “Academic Computer-Aided Design” software, which started out as a joint development project between Autodesk and the University of Toronto. ACAD first appeared in 1977. It was designed to support small-scale circuit design using a light pen on an “ACADWAN” workstation, which was a personal computer with a light pen and parallel port, with a full-color monitor and printer. The initial target market was engineering students at the University of Toronto, but sales were good enough that Autodesk were able to develop and sell it to other educational users. The early ACADWAN (1981) was a 32-bit machine, with 16MB of RAM and a 40MB hard disk. ACADWAN was developed in an undocumented language called “ACADC”, which was very similar to COBOL.

The first commercial release of ACAD was the commercially-oriented 16-bit version of ACADC, for the INTEL 8086, IBM PC and compatibles. In 1983 Autodesk released version 1.0 of AutoCAD, which was an updated and rewritten version of ACADC. It was the first commercial release that was not an acronym.

AutoCAD 1.0 for the INTEL 8086 was a DOS application, with little memory available to store drawing and drawing setup information. It did not have user-programmable dialogs, but it did have simple text objects. It was marketed as a CAD program, and was aimed primarily at users of DRAW, an early DOS line drawing program, and is often referred to as AutoCAD for DRAW users.

AutoCAD 1.0 was launched on January 12, 1983. It ran at a resolution of 1024×768, and the screen size was 1024×500, but only a little over 100 pixels could be used for objects. It seems as if he’s always looking to take a shot, and while he has a great release of shot, he can’t always get the puck to move.

“Sometimes I shoot too early, and sometimes I shoot too late,” he said. “I try to get to the net, and sometimes I don’t. It’s getting better.”

Forsling may not be the most skilled player, but his sense of humor and creativity are something that will help Soderberg become a better player. Perhaps it will help get him that first NHL goal, and many more after that.

These moves represent a significant turning point in the green movement’s quest to stop the growing extraction of coal and crude oil from American and Canadian land, a development that in turn will irreversibly accelerate the country’s global warming.

The looming halt to new oil pipelines is crucial to the climate agenda because these energy projects are the most viable source of Canadian tar sands crude. If Obama completes the moratorium and mandates a response plan, we should expect no new oil pipelines to be built, at least for the next year.

The most sensible course of action would be for Obama to order the U.S. Department of the Interior to examine the environmental impacts of every pipeline proposal before issuing permits to build them. But that would take political courage, given the president’s fear of being outflanked by the right.

It is ironic that Obama waited until a year into his presidency to implement the moratorium. Although it is too early to celebrate, a modest victory has been achieved.

It has taken more than 30 years of campaigning, legal action, fund-raising and demonstrations to finally bring the Keystone XL pipeline to the president’s desk, where he holds all the cards. The facts are irrefutable: The pipeline will increase carbon dioxide emissions by 700,000 tons a year and produce up to three times as much pollution as conventional crude oil.
