-Part 1: Writing a Game
We started out as a few friends in a garage in the summer of 2014. Our vision was pretty simple at the beginning – create a game with 100% of the core gameplay we wanted in a 2-D platformer. I wish I could share some deep and meaningful insight into our thinking when we started, but that’s not really the way we work. This is how we worked:
Within a couple of weeks we’d begun prototyping some of the most memorable gameplay aspects of the game. Our focus was pretty early on was making our enemies – and bosses, of course – feel threatening and avoidable. It’s difficult to share the core gameplay of a game you’ve only just started without too much spoilers, but I would say that our enemies all have their own very particular style, personality, and approach to the game.

Of course, we were keen to start working on other aspects of the game right away. We decided to start working on the level editor, and worked on creating a prototype of that in the first few weeks. We’d basically laid the basic foundation for the game we wanted to make right out of the gate.
The bulk of the game’s development was split between the “actual work” of programming and implementing content – and “ideation”, which is talking with the designer(s), doing playtests, and finalizing gameplay. Playtesting is such a big part of the game’s development, and I can’t emphasize that enough. It really is a huge part of ensuring that a game is fun and fun to play. This article is a re-enactment of the creation of Nioh’s new weapon Wakizashi. The game was cancelled after Sega pulled the plug on the project, but there was detailed development history to be unearthed and redeemed to create a unique article. It was going to be three of us, a one woman team, and we’re hella excited to share Nioh’s origin story.
First, some basics about Dark Souls Dark Flame aka Dark Flame. A superhero fighting game reimagined as a turn-based RPG. Players control our hero, Jonathan, through a feudal Japan steampunk setting, fighting bosses, archenemies, and even each other. Playable as both a single player and two player online co-operative, it supports cross-platform play with Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and PS Vita thanks to the Warner Brothers partnership. Jonathan and the starter pack cost 20 bucks from the creators’ website.
It was going to be three of us, we decided – me, Sasquatch, and Sucubi – a one woman team to create the game in early 2013. This is a time when the games that we want to make, the games that we are passionate about, are released in a large wave of indie game making. Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery grew from a dream of making a beautiful, hand drawn, hand-drawn MMORPG, The Persistence, and Thumper grew from us giving detailed outlines of the music we wanted (we’d never made games before, not even small ones). Tinker Turtle started from a passion to make a GAME, but as a famous conversation goes, everything started as a side project.
So we joined nearly a year and a half of desperation led by no sleep, no food, and we dove in and didn’t look back.

We’re at the 70% completion status on our Kickstarter – shutting it down would be a major betrayal to the team that poured everything they had into the project. This means that the project is no longer biologically possible but Nioh continues to evolve, and has already changed into Nioh, even as we near it’s end. There are a few things that seem to be very crucial to my play-through of the game.
Get used to the controls
It seems like the controls are designed to be as simple as possible. No Clavier keys at all.
You press W, A, S, and D to move
You press the Arrow keys to jump
Press space to stay in place
Press the up arrow key to pause the game
Press the down arrow key to unpause the game
The game will also give you instructions on how to use different keys. E.g. Arrow keys are used to move but also to jump. Escape makes you run away. Spacebar makes you pause.
You also have the use of a sneak button. The press on this button pause the game, and then allows you to jump without a sound.
Because of this, I was getting very confused at first. You quickly learn the controls and you know what to expect when a new key combo pops up.
You can also start a new game and revisit previous areas by entering the room you have just been in. The only way to leave the room is to enter the room again or turn the game off and start again.
The timing for the pause is also not perfect. When you start the game it goes into a freeze state, and you have to wait 3 seconds before you can do anything else. While in freeze mode you can interact with items that are not on the ground. This means you can grab a gold coin from your pocket if you die.
If you jump during a freeze it will start running again. You can’t jump whilst paused.
