HOLMImpulse is an application which demonstrates how you can make
measurements using any soundcard and a microphone. The features include
accurate, quick, and unattended measurements, exact timings, and the
ability to record audio data. To make measurements, hold down the
“M1” or “M2” keys of the keyboard and simultaneously press the “Center
Key”. The application automatically selects the highest pitch from a
given soundcard and the highest pitch of the microphone. The measurements
are automatically converted to millisecond and separated into
measurements with only the highest pitch in the overall measurement.
The measurements can be saved and played back with a number of different
options, including splitting measurements into different files. An
optional high pass filter is useful to reduce the amount of background
noise. HOLMImpulse requires a soundcard that can work in
measurement mode. The application works for any soundcard that has an SNDPlay
kernel driver. The frequency resolution can be increased by lowering
the mode switch frequency (the frequency at which the on-screen
measurements are displayed). To increase the frequency resolution, the
center frequency of the M2 button must be adjusted to a frequency which
the soundcard can accept.
You can enable the center switch between M1 and M2 to quickly change
the selected mode between measurements. In the measurement mode, there
are quick measurements and accurate measurements for the entire frequency
range available. For quick measurements, click the M1 or M2 keys while
the center switch is pressed. To make an accurate measurement, click the
M1 or M2 keys while the center key is released. In the accurate mode,
there are measurements for the entire frequency range available. For
accurate measurements, click the M1 or M2 keys and press the center key
before making the measurement. It is recommended that when performing
accurate measurements, the soundcard should be configured to have a
higher-than-normal sample rate and playback.
