It is important to note that the zproject library has been integrated into eclise, a free IDE from eclipse.org. Thus, you can easily update and build your projects in eclispe IDE. See the eclipse help page

Also, the zthread library is integrated into Emacs, a free, cross-platform IDE. To check the right version of zthread, open the emacs.el file and check the value of its variable zthread-version.
If you don’t have any of the mentioned IDEs, you can still install them.

You can’t. As pdw mentioned, the main problem is that std::thread doesn’t protect you from thread scheduling changes that might have happened since the thread was constructed. The thread-safe thread functions have about the same problem. You can’t reliably rely on the assumption that a thread is in the same state it was in when you created it.
If you really need this, you can of course wrap the thread functions in C style code which can verify that the underlying thread state has not changed. But you’d lose all the nice features that the C++ threads make available.

My first suggestion would be to forget about std::thread for this kind of task.
The reason is that std::thread is explicitly designed for use in a single-threaded context. The class is in fact such an ‘unsafe’ class in multithreaded environments.
