A typical electrophoretic system includes an electrophoresis chamber containing a gel or other support matrix, a means for dispensing the sample into the gel, a pair of electrodes disposed to apply an electric field to the gel, and a controller for controlling the application of the electric field and processing the samples.
The technique of electrophoresis has a variety of applications including DNA sequencing, DNA fingerprinting, cellulose and dextran molecule separation, biosensors and medical diagnostic techniques. In particular, the size of a sample of DNA to be analyzed typically is in the range of several hundred base pairs (bp) to several hundred thousand bp. As a result, prior art devices have typically been designed to run samples on the order of several hundred μL or less.
It is also typically desirable to be able to handle several samples of DNA simultaneously. Electrophoretic technology is at a point where this would be useful if it were not for the fact that known electrophoretic systems do not provide the most efficient use of laboratory space. There is an unmet need for an electrophoretic system with a small footprint that can handle up to several thousand samples at a time.
In addition, prior art electrophoretic systems provide only a limited number of solutions and there is an unmet need for an electrophoretic system that offers a wide variety of solutions to accommodate a wide variety of different samples.
It is desirable to measure the distance traveled by molecules within the gel, since this provides information about the location and relative concentration of the molecules. Many electrophoretic systems known in the art incorporate a detector (e.g. a fluorescent detector) in the gel that provides optical information about the molecules. The optical information may be processed to provide a representation of the molecules. However, the known electrophoretic systems suffer from the drawback that the optical information is not recorded continuously as the molecules travel through the gel. Rather, the optical information is recorded only at predetermined intervals and processed to provide a representation of the molecules. It is desirable to provide a continuous record of the location of the molecules.
The present invention overcomes these and other problems with a system and method for continuous elect
