Who needs a sub? Well in a submarine you can avoid everyone, go naked, and drink beer. The real question is why on Earth would you want to use a sub?
Submarine is a rogue-like action game in which you take control of a stealthy submarines. You can no longer fast travel or use items, but it’s your life at stake if the Other Submarine catches you.
You can equip the ‘Actions’ which perform different actions once you hold the corresponding key. There are ‘Defensive Actions’ and ‘Offensive Actions’. You can also equip the ‘Special Attack’ which will leave traces and uses an offensive ‘Engaged Action’.
All of your supplies are unlocked in the beginning of each level. Once you’ve reached a certain depth the Other Submarine will begin to detect you. It will then learn your style of navigating and will time your entry in such a way that it will always be ready for you when you enter the sub.
I’m not mad about the dress code that the Other Submarine uses. The gameplay is great and I had a lot of fun playing through the first few levels. It’s really quick to play through and a nice change of pace to keep the various colors apart. I imagine it would be harder to play through if you were used to playing on the main protagonist. I don’t recommend you play through the main protagonist unless you can dedicate an entire day to it. The first couple levels are pretty easy for a rogue-like game, but the later levels on the protagonist make it a little harder than they should be. I would assume that these later levels are set up to be harder, but there are a few beginner traps that could be confusing. There are a lot of levels, and none of them are long.
I’m not crazy about the landing points of the levels. There is no indication of depth, just a link and a 0-15 meter indicator. There is also no countdown when the level finishes, which is a bit disappointing. There is no way of progressing to the next level unless you reach the top of the ladder at the beginning of the level. This is a problem for the early levels, which make it difficult to navigate your way to the top without hitting landmines or strange objects. The way that most of the levels in Submarine progress means that you have to start the level over again if you want to

The game engine is the heart of Other Submarine. It handles all of the heavy lifting and provides the framework for the entire game. The game engine is built on top of Game Maker.

Like most games, combat in Other Submarine is a turn based game that, at its core, is about coordinated position of your characters and weapons in relation to your opponent. Even more so, it’s the interaction of your characters, weapons, and the environment. All of that is interwoven into a tightly tied weave of the entire game. If that sounds fancy, just consider the layers, or layers of layers, that exists in the game.
There are two kinds of weapon: offensive (attack) and defensive (armor). One weapon is always in use during one round. Weapons can be upgraded in certain circumstances (Defence, AI, etc), but upgrading cannot occur during combat unless an item is missing.
The environment changes at the start of every round and will cause it’s own set of problems and effects. For example, if the entire sub is damaged, certain characters will die. Characters that are near the sub and are of the same type of character that has been damaged will receive a damage penalty.

The game begins with creating a full set of characters. Each character has a unique set of stats to manage how well they perform. The actions that they can take are limited based on the difficulty setting. If a character goes into Survival mode, they can only walk and climb in the environment. If they go into Adventure mode, they can do that and have some limited crafting skills.

If the ship is sinking, jump out of it instead of moving forward. Use down to jump in any direction when you see a rope. You can usually jump out of a sinking sub just by using down, but some have a minimum weight requirement.
Sometimes there will be a ton of ice or ice blocks on the outside of the sub. You can blow holes in the ice by hitting the fire button and left click. Also watch out for sharp ice and some boxes that you can destroy by clicking and holding left click.
If there is a collision with the enemy sub, the engineer’s sub will disappear and the last engineer to be on the sub will die.
If you are getting shot at from behind the engine room, you will have time to do anything in the room. Reloading your guns will take less time when you are in the room so use that. You can also climb over the engine room and shoot at the enemy from there. If you die and you still want to continue, you can blow a hole in the side of the submarine with the shotgun and use that to get in the engine room.
Don’t worry about the enemies in the top of the tower if the bottom ones are not too close. You can escape most bullet attacks by getting below the floating pipes at the bottom of the tower. You will have to rely on your auto-reload to keep you alive, but there is a lot of space below the tower.
You can jump into the tower to survive. You have to jump to the right hand side of the tower to continue, but you can reload quickly by running around it. Watch out for where the men will be at at different times.
When you are outside of the sub, you can use the radar to tell if the submarine you are attacking is going up or down. Also, as you get closer to your target, the heat level will increase.
If you are alone and you come under attack, you can make your weapon be electric and go back into the engineer’s sub to recover.
If the target sub is turning, you can jump from the ladder into the sub. When you jump, you can find the best way to balance yourself on top of the sub or you can jump right into the enemy.
