History
AutoCAD was originally developed by Unisys and first released in 1982. It was originally a two-dimensional drafting and design program. Its name is an acronym for “Automatic Computer-Aided Drafting”.
The 1986 release of AutoCAD Extended introduced three-dimensional capabilities with support for importing and exporting STL (stereolithography) models. AutoCAD Extended also introduced the ability to import and export DWF (digital wireframe) and DWF (digital watermarked) files as well as a host of other features. The latest release of AutoCAD Extended is version 2012, released in March 2012.
The older AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT came in two editions: Basic and Advanced. Basic is a cut down version without many of the advanced features and performance options available in the Advanced release, but including many features of the following editions and releases. A version of AutoCAD LT called AutoCAD LT for Designers was released as a service pack in 1993 and contained many of the features that were introduced in AutoCAD Extended.
AutoCAD LT for Designers was replaced in 1995 with AutoCAD LT Release 3. This contained many of the same features that were available in AutoCAD Extended. This release included the addition of a new “designer” interface, which was not backwards compatible with the previous versions of AutoCAD LT. AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT still exist as separate products.
In 2007, AutoCAD LT was released in a “Revisit Edition” (REV). This was a version that used the design interface. The design interface was the interface that was used in release 3. AutoCAD LT was released again in 2010, this time called AutoCAD LT 2010. This was a new version of the product, but the new design interface is not backwards compatible with the Revit interface.
AutoCAD LT Release 4 (ARR 4) was released on September 26, 2010. It contained some features not found in the previous releases. It had a new user interface and some new functionality. It was a combination of the ARR and the previous design interface versions and is called “AutoCAD LT for Designers”. It is the first release of AutoCAD LT to not be released under the Unisys brand and is now a standalone product. A software update has since been released that converted the earlier versions of the software into the new user interface.
