Like layers, adjustment layers are extremely useful in creating specialized effects. They create various variations in an image. For example, imagine a photograph of a flower. Photoshop’s adjustment layers work differently than layers. They allow you to create your effects on the same layer but in a specific area of the image. Thus, you can edit the original in a way that’s much more intuitive. The capability to work with adjustment layers also makes editing images easy and less time-consuming. For example, you can edit an image with many layers and individual effects on those layers without having to worry about overlapping effects.
While there are many different types of adjustment layers, the most common that you’re likely to use are Hue, Saturation, and Curves. Adjustment layers allow you to use the tools in Photoshop to manipulate the color, brightness, and contrast of an image.
When working with adjustment layers, you can perform the following tasks:
Select: By choosing an adjustment layer and making a click in the artboard, Photoshop selects an area that it knows as the active layer. For example, if you click the Adjust Hue/Saturation layer, only the adjustment layer’s effect is shown in the foreground as a matte. The original layer is shown in the background as a drawing/paint.
Group: Some layers are grouped. By grouping layers you can apply a common effect to multiple layers. You can create an adjustment layer and then add other layers to it, or you can simply add multiple layers and then create an adjustment layer.
Hint: Photoshop hides adjustment layers from view by default. You must show the adjustment layer itself or the effects that it applies to the original layer.

This 12-week, randomized, double-blind, flexible-dose, placebo-controlled trial tested the efficacy of intramuscular risperidone in children and adolescents ages 6 to 16 years with TS (n = 69). Most patients met DSM-IV criteria for TS. Efficacy was evaluated by parent-reported tic severity, global, tic, and ADHD symptom ratings. Safety was evaluated using adverse event monitoring and the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale. The 12-week open-label risperidone treatment improved tic severity, as measured by the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale-Children (YGTSS-C). Following a 3-week placebo washout period, parents reported greater tic severity on the YGTSS-C in patients treated with risperidone compared with placebo, 3 weeks before randomization, with significantly greater improvements from baseline at Week 12 (p = 0.004). In a subgroup of patients who received a stable dose of 1 mg per week, risperidone also significantly improved tic severity, as measured by the Tourette Syndrome Impact Scale (TSIS-P). The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has confirmed that it has received samples from Russia of the nerve agent that poisoned the former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury.
The samples were taken from the scenes of the crime and analysed by an independent laboratory in Germany. They were delivered to the OPCW in The Hague on Tuesday, with a note indicating that they had come from “the person, location or vehicle of [the incident]”.
Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia remain critically ill in hospital with life-threatening symptoms caused by the attack. The first joint statement released by the UK government and the Russian government after the incident in March said the agents identified “to be a Novichok (organophosphorus) nerve agent”. On 4 May a Russian government spokesman said that the substance was “the nerve agent of the class developed by Russia in the ’90s”.
The OPCW has repeatedly declined to comment on the substance in question, even though it was clear by that point that the nerve agent was, indeed, Novichok, a type of highly toxic nerve agent developed by the Soviet Union in the late 1960s and manufactured before and after the collapse of the USSR.
Russia has produced some of the substances but denies that it created Novichok. The reason for the uncertainty was that the OPCW organelle in charge of identifying banned chemicals is the so-called Joint OPCW-UN Mission in Syria, which monitors Syrian chemical weapons sites. That mission was present in Syria from 2013 to 2018, and only last month suggested that it had seen “several dozen cylinders” that it believed were of a chemical nature. But it drew a blank when tested for the nerve agent Novichok.
Russia’s claims that it did not know what substance had been used against Mr Skripal and his daughter were initially treated with scepticism by the media in the UK, since it was not possible for the OPCW not to see or smell the substance, and since no known source of such a substance existed in the UK. The OPCW’s initial statement to the UN Security Council, before the fact that it had received the samples, suggested that the substance was of a completely new type, developed by Russia.
