Relaxed 60-year-old Giles McEntee has been a regular footy-goer in his northern Sydney hometown of Oak Flats since he was knee-high.
Votes for women, same-sex marriage and stopping the boats: Mr McEntee was among 74,000 older Australians in Australia who were paid to hand out leaflets to their neighbours in the electoral roll of Electoral Commission ”don’t canvass me” schemes.
He worked on several campaigns before he was eventually ”bought off” last year with an A$400 payment, a lump-sum payment worth just over half what the NSW Electoral Commission had initially estimated he should have received.
”You can’t make a market out of this, and I think it’s a bad thing,” Mr McEntee said.

”I think it’s wrong to think a person is so little of value that he can be bought off.”
Mr McEntee, an aged care worker, was one of around 1200 people paid to leaflet the community for political candidates in the first two months of last year. But it wasn’t until some media attention was attracted that the public realised, to their horror, that the payment was paid from the electoral commission’s general fund.
The NSW Electoral Commission chief executive Frances Mao said the payment policy had been inappropriate and that the commission had been forced to reveal the payments to the public due to the growing public disquiet.
Ms Mao said while it was reasonable to expect thousands of older Australians to canvass for their candidates, the commission was aware of a ”fairly significant number” who had not wanted to hand out leaflets, and instead wanted some sort of payment.
”My view is that there should be an incentive, but it needs to be proportionate and reasonable for the appropriate amount of work,”

We’re using Twilio to send SMS messages to customers as part of their account setup. We would like to use the official SDK instead of doing it by hand — it would get us out of having to hold customers’ private keys.
My question is, what is the best way for us to implement this in a small set of Node.js application that’s not mine? Is there a module to use that is compatible with the latest Twilio API ClientLibrary?
Ideally it would work like this:

>The Municipal Workers Union East, along with other small unions, had planned on state-run negotiations to determine the fate of public employees. But after its legal challenge to a local budget override failed, union leaders changed their strategy and initiated strike negotiations.
On Aug. 19, the General Municipal Employees Association — of which the East union is a division — issued a “notice of intent” to strike, notifying top-level officials in city hall that it would walk off the job if necessary to win contract negotiations.
As of Tuesday evening, the strike had not taken place. Union representatives say that wages and benefits remain at contract levels, but that the sides will continue negotiations.
“We don’t want anyone to think that we went away without a fight,” said Maureen O’Brien, a lawyer for the Eastunion and an organizer of the strike preparations. “It’s important to take a shot at this and see what happens.”
Just last month, a compromise deal — called a “funding certificate” — was hammered out to present a watered-down version of the city’s budget for the next fiscal year. Tougher cuts were made in each department, and nearly $30 million in city services were cut in return for a decrease in the public employee payroll by 5 percent.
On Monday, Florida’s Supreme Court in a 4-2 ruling downgraded that budget. The ruling could lead to another round of budget cuts.
Kejal Fernando-Ripeiro, co-chair of the GMA union, said the Supreme Court’s decision would stoke disagreements over the department cuts. It meant that only the two members of the Supreme Court who were members of the union are still aligned with the union on the budget, and two members of the division’s bargaining committee are now “not on the same page,” he said.
Mr. Fernando-Ripeiro said he will speak with union leadership in the following weeks about whether and how to proceed. If mediation is ordered, union leaders don’t intend to strike yet.
“We are in a position where we are at the table talking to them,” he said.
